Choir and string orchestra to perform “Magnificat in C major” by Pergolesi December 18
A full performance of the Magnificat by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi will be sung at St. David’s Episcopal Church on Sunday, December 18, in the context of the 10:00 a.m. service. Under the direction of Abel Searor, the choir and string quartet will intersperse the sections of the work with readings and hymns for the Fourth Sunday in Advent.
This delightful Baroque piece of contested authorship is a lesser known gem of choral literature and is seldom performed. It is uncertain whether the work was written by Pergolesi, or his teacher Durante but regardless of its source, the piece is a light and joyous vocal offering for Advent 4.
Christmas Eve services will be held at 4:00 p.m., with children and youth musicians and readers, and at 10:00 p.m. Christmas prelude music begins at 9:30 p.m. The choir will performChristmas Day by Gustov Holst and lead the congregation in traditional hymns and carols.
